Before the party, families clean their homes. They want a fresh start for the new year.
On the first day, people go to the temple. They pour water on Buddha statues. The water is clean and it smells nice. Children pour water on the hands of their grandparents too. This shows love and respect.
Then the fun begins! People are in the streets. They have buckets, bottles and water guns. They splash water on friends and on strangers. Everyone is wet and everyone is laughing. Many people wear colourful shirts.
Water is very special at Songkran. It washes away bad luck. It brings good luck for the new year.
