Many years ago, children in America read comic books. Inside these comic books, there were adverts for small live pets. Children could buy tiny baby reptiles by post for a few dollars. These small reptiles were called caimans. Caimans look like small alligators. They came from Central and South America.
At first, the baby caimans were very small. They were only twenty centimetres long. Many families bought them as cute pets. However, the caimans grew very quickly. Soon, they were over two metres long! They were too big and strong for a bedroom.
People did not know what to do with big caimans. Many owners carried them to rivers and swamps in Florida and let them go. Florida has warm weather and lots of water. The caimans liked this new home. They found food and started families. Today, many wild caimans live in Florida. They compete with local animals for fish and birds.
