Meet the bare-throated bellbird. It is a bird from South America. It lives in big, green forests. The male bird is white. He has a blue-green throat. He has a wide beak, too.

This bird is very, very loud! His call is louder than a big machine on the road. It is louder than a rock concert! Scientists measure sound in decibels. The bellbird's call is more than 130 decibels. That is a lot!

Why is the male bird so loud? He is calling to female birds. He wants a partner.

Two scientists study bird sounds. They listen to 123 kinds of birds. They use a special machine. The machine measures loud and quiet sounds.

The scientists find something interesting. Big birds are often loud. Birds with wide beaks are often loud, too. A goose is loud. A small hummingbird is quiet.

But the scientists have a question. Why are some birds so loud? Nobody knows the answer yet! The scientists are still thinking about it.
